Berlin modernist housing chosen

Unesco’s world heritage committee has named six modernist housing estates in Berlin as a world heritage site.The estates, designed by architects including Walter Gropius, MartinWagner and Bruno Taut {whose Carl Legien estate is pictured}, werepraised for creating examples of new urban typologies, and technicaland aesthetic innovations. Inits citation, the committee said “the housing estates testify toinnovative housing policies from 1910 to 1933, especially during theWeimar Republic, when the city of Berlin was particularly progressivesocially, politically and culturally.”
