Koichi Takada Architects have released details on a mixed-use, multi-residential complex that is expected to serve as the gateway of Sydney’s Green Square Town Centre, a major new residential, retail and cultural hub at the heart of Australia’s biggest urban renewal project.

The $8 billion Green Square project aims to renovate a former industrial 280-hectare southern precinct located 3.5 kilometres from the city centre into a vibrant and sustainable urban environment. The development’s area includes the suburbs of Beaconsfield and Zetland, and parts of Rosebery, Alexandria and Waterloo.

The new curved tower will feature 416 residential apartments and 5,000 square metres of retail and restaurant space. 

The Green Square will create an urban green living model with developments that include shops, parks, gardens and entertainment areas, all of which will be connected by bike and walking routes and public transport. The development promises innovative housing design, bespoke business and retail, and creative and engaged communities.

Already, 5,700 new homes have been built in the area since 2000, bringing in 11,000 new residents. Green Square is expected to attract 40,000 more residents in the next 15 years and is expected to create around 22,000 new jobs.

Shaped by the pedestrian and traffic flows that surround the building, the 20-storey tower designed by Koichi Takada Architects (KTA) will be formed by two distinctive, continuing loops – the public and the residential loop – connected by garden terraces. The first was designed to activate the streetscape next to the Green Square Plaza by permitting sunlight, while the second loop will provide residents with essential amenities and an open space to allow sun and breezes into the public loop.

According to KTA architects, the project will ring in a new, interactive residential philosophy.

“The two loops connect, becoming a seamless and continuous part of the architectural fabric. The resulting design is one that is fluid, connected, activated and responsive to the urban context of Green Square Town Centre and its desire for a new vision of architecture,” the architects explained.

The new tower will feature 416 residential apartments and 5,000 square metres of retail and restaurant space, joining 1,576 other development applications, a list that includes a new library, a public plaza and an aquatic centre and sports park.

The proposal is formed by two distinctive, continuing loops; the public and the residential loop.

“Green Square is Australia’s biggest urban renewal project and the City is working to ensure it is a beautiful, sustainable and well-functioning neighbourhood. Once it is completed it will completely transform the southern part of our city,” said Sydney Mayor Clover Moore.

The Green Square town centre project is expected to be completed by 2030.
