United Kingdom Architecture News - Mar 15, 2014 - 12:22 6789 views
The School of Architecture of Tianjin University and the Chinese press group, Urban Environmental Design (UED), are launching the third edition of the UIA-HYP Cup 2014 International Student Competition in Architectural Design.
COMPETITION THEME
The theme of the competition held annually on the Chinese mainland is always “Architecture in Transformation,” but the specific focus changes every year. The subject for the 2014 edition is “Unexpected City,” a topic chosen by jury chairman Daniel Libeskind.
According to Mr. Libeskind: “We know the digital city, the sustainable city, and the smart city. But city in transition is also about the unexpected city, the unexpected social city, the unexpected public space that a city can have, the unexpected city of art, the unexpected social and cultural encounters that a city can give us. So I think the ‘Unexpected City’ is also the city in transition and the city of the future.”
The participants will choose a site of around 4,000 m2 for their projects and can define its characteristics.

Twelve prizes will be awarded: one First Prize of around $10,000; three Second Prizes of around $5,000; eight Third Prizes of around $1,700. Twenty Honourable Mentions will also be attributed.
