Rijndam Revalidatie, one of the largest physical rehabilitation centres in the Netherlands, has appointed Mecanoo as the architect for the redesign and extension of their location in the city centre of Rotterdam. Rijndam provides high quality physical rehabilitation care with highly specialized services. The project includes the renovation of the existing main building from 1995 and the Maasdam Building, a municipal monument from 1943. To this complex, 3500 m2 of new build will be added resulting in a total area of 16,000 m2. Rijndam chose Mecanoo because it believes that: "Mecanoo are able to create a building with aesthetic and architectural qualities without losing sight of the functional aspects of rehabilitation care."
Mecanoo will combine human scale and functionality in a sustainable design with a recognizable identity. Ellen van der Wal, architect and partner at Mecanoo: "During the design process, we constantly keep in mind what it means for people to rehabilitate, sometimes at the heights of their emotions. For patients as well as professionals. We will therefore create a friendly, motivating and welcoming environment that matches the high quality rehabilitation care of Rijndam." Mecanoo will work closely together with Rijndam staff in order to deliver the best possible design.
