The International Union of Architects (UIA) has announced the theme as "Design for Strength" for the 2025 World Architecture Day.
World Architecture Day was established by the UIA in 1985 and is annually celebrated on the first Monday of October in parallel with the United Nations' (UN) World Habitat Day.
The theme for World Habitat Day in 2025 will focus on urban crisis response, and will be celebrated on Monday, October 6, 2025.
Through this theme, the UIA encourages architects all around to adopt strategies that strengthen the built environment's resilience, adaptability, and rebuildability rather than focusing only on temporary solutions. In addition to providing shelter, architecture should promote equity, continuity, and resilience—particularly during disruptive and critical times.
Key messages include Strength in Design, A Platform for Resilience, and Sustainable Rebuilding.
Strength in Design is built upon how our built environment should reflect durability, resilience, and cultural sensitivity to effectively support communities. A Platform for Resilience refers to the built environment which is crucial in protecting and rebuilding communities after human-made or natural disasters.
Sustainable Rebuilding is about designing for strength that includes the ability to repair, restore, and adapt our built environment using environmentally responsible materials and methods.
In order to increase public awareness, the UIA welcomes architects to explore the issue of "Design for Strength" through programs including webinars, exhibitions, and talks.
In order to prepare the next generation of architects to tackle the complex challenges of our quickly changing world, the Union encourages its Member Sections to share best practices and knowledge in resilience-focused architecture, present examples of creative and inclusive design for crisis-affected areas, and support architectural education.
The UIA urges that all Member Sections submit information on their World Architecture Day activities to [email protected] by September 15th in order to support their efforts.
As part of UIA's global exhibition of activities that are in line with this year's topic, these efforts will be highlighted on the UIA website and social media.
The International Union of Architects (UIA) is an international non-governmental organisation based in Paris. Established in 1948, it is the only organisation representing architects across the globe working to unify architects, influence public policies on construction and development, and advance architecture in service to the needs of society.
