Snøhetta's Shanghai Grand Opera House nears completion
China Architecture News - Mar 02, 2026 - 05:03 252 views

Snøhetta, East China Architectural Design & Research Institute (ECADI), Theatre Projects, and Nagata Acoustics were commissioned in 2019 as a consortium to deliver the Shanghai Grand Opera House from the initial concept to the final completion after their proposal won the 2017 international competition.
The Opera House is a daring cultural destination designed to captivate audiences in a variety of genres, from modern and experimental pieces to classic opera and orchestral performances.

Positioned prominently along the convex bank of the Huangpu River, the Opera House is set to become an iconic anchor of Shanghai's emerging cultural masterplan, which aims to further elevate the city as a global hub of culture, commerce, and innovation.
The Shanghai Grand Opera House is nearing completion and is expected to open to the public in the second half of 2026, with the interior of the structure currently taking on its final form.

Inside the Opera House, a potent conversation between monumentality and movement is currently taking place. The public rooms are flooded with sunshine by soaring transparent façades, and the interior is shaped by sculptural, deep-red volumes that spiral across the space.
The interior is transformed from a performance environment into an experience, with architecture taking center stage before the curtain ever rises.

The flowing movements of the human body in theater and dance serve as inspiration for the building's design.
The site is surrounded by a single, sweeping gesture that echoes the Huangpu River's ebb and flow and creates "one shelter," where the roof serves as a public stage, an elevated observation platform, and a gathering place for the community.

The helical roof, which offers year-round, 24-hour community access and celebrates both the individual and the collective, promotes civic pride and a sense of shared ownership. As guests ascend, a spiraling staircase that links the ground and the sky opens them vistas of the city and riverbanks.

In addition to highlighting the district's ecological goals, the project serves as a catalyst for urban renewal. The circular pattern of the surrounding landscape reinforces a low-carbon, holistic design objective by reflecting the architectural geometry of the opera house.

Snøhetta and the East China Architectural Design & Research Institute worked closely together to build the Shanghai Grand Opera House, from architecture and landscape to interior design, guaranteeing the project's strong local relevance and integration.
