Istanbul, Berlin and New York-based architecture practice Salon Alper Derinbogaz has transformed sound waves into architectural elements for a retail store in Istanbul, Turkey.

Named Groove Heaven, the design idea investigates how music may transcend its auditory limitations and become a spatial experience that guests can interact with through touch, sight, and movement in addition to listening.

Designed for Beymen, a chain of luxury department stores in Istanbul, with the major inspiration coming from the way sound waves naturally propagate, the store is a place created to replicate those elusive moments when we are completely engrossed in music.

In the space, sound waves are transformed into architectural components, becoming physical forces that influence the surroundings.

Entrance Perspective

"The vision for Groove Heaven was to create an atmosphere where sound waves influence every aspect of the space," said Salon Alper Derinbogaz.

"The rhythm of a bassline, rendered on a larger scale, serves as the foundation for the design language. Rotating display shelves, the texture of the floor, and lighting elements simulate the fluid motion of sound."

"This intentional interaction between sound and space allows for a seamless connection between the invisible qualities of music and the visible, material world, giving form to the intangible," the studio explained.

Architectural Elements in Flux

The sculptural "Love Seat" is the focal point of the space; its organic shape alludes to the proximity of intertwined bodies and conveys a feeling of coziness and intimacy.

With order to improve the tactile sensation and replicate the warmth and softness of bedding, the "Love Seat" is covered with specifically created materials that are printed.

Visitors are encouraged to stay and engage with the materiality of sound in the same way that they would with the cozy fabric of a familiar, intimate environment, as this focal component contrasts with the more rhythmic and organized elements around it.

Groove Heaven seeks to highlight the unifying force of music in a time when urban living frequently results in social disconnection and independence. The design provides a respite from the bustle of the retail setting by converting sound waves into spatial patterns.

Love Seat

It turns into a brief haven where guests can re-establish connections with their environment, with other people, and with the relaxing, universal language of music.

This sensory experience grounds visitors in the collaborative potential that music provides to communal spaces, in addition to providing a focal point for visual and aural engagement.

Reflections

Groove Heaven's multi-sensory, layered design invites a more in-depth contemplation of the ways in which people, music, and space interact in a world that is becoming more and more fractured.
