PLANE—SITE releases video interviews with curators of French, German, US and Nordic Pavilions

PLANE—SITE, a global video channel agency, has released exclusive videos with curators of the US, French, Nordic and German Pavilions for those who have not visited yet at this year's Venice Architecture Biennale, curated by the Irish duo Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara under the title of Freespace

Developed in collaboration with archipinion, four video-interviews, exploring the major pavilions, have been unveiled as mini-series in order to capture the essence of the pavilion and their themes with the curators.

At the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale, the US Pavilion explores "Dimensions Of Citizenship", while the French Pavilion investigating "Infinity Places" to emphasise the inventive processes that generate architectural processes of value. Undoubtedly, the Nordic Pavilion is a star pavilion of the Biennale with its theme "Another Generosity", presenting giant cellular structures to emphasize a symbiotic relationship between human being and natural environment. The German Pavilion made another hit with a socio-political dimension themed as "Unbuilding Walls", which presents outstanding examples of urban and architectural design that address aspects of division and integration.

In four videos below, take a nice journey to the Pavilions with the curators to explore their theme in deep sense:

US Pavilion

PLANE—SITE, together with archipinion, visited the US Pavilion exhibition where we had the chance to talk with Mimi Zeiger, one of its three curators. In the video, Zeiger talks about the theme, "Dimensions of Citizenship", and how it "challenges architects and designers to envision what it means to be a citizen today." With an emphasis on the American-Mexican border and combating conventional notions of citizenship, this exhibition provides not only a political discussion, but also one of humanity.

French Pavilion

PLANE—SITE visited the French Pavilion exhibition and caught up with its three curators: Nicola Delon, Julien Choppin and Sébastien Eymard of Encore Heureux. In this short interview with Nicola Delon, he discusses how their exhibition, "Infinite Places", uses objects, video and models to explore how existing buildings can playfully adapt to create places of freedom and experimentation.

Nordic Pavilion

At the Nordic Pavilion, PLANE—SITE had the opportunity to talk to Eero Lundén. The theme of the exhibition is titled "Another Generosity", and encourages the onlooker to view the natural and built environments as one, instead of as separate entities. The large, cellular structures in the pavilion consist of both air and water, and are directly influenced by the outside environment, giving the impression that all is one, and no part of the whole is unrelated.

German Pavilion

At the German Pavilion, PLANE—SITE spoke with the curators Marianne Birthler, Lars Krückeberg, Wolfram Putz and Thomas Willemeit of GRAFT. Taking the theme of "Unbuilding Walls", this year’s pavilion starts with the idea that a wall is more than just a dividing line — they also shape psychic boundaries within society. How, the curators ask, can such walls be deconstructed?

The 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale, curated by Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara under the title of Freespace, will be on view from May 26th to November 25th, 2018 in the Giardini and the Arsenale, and around other venues in Venice.
