Sanjay Puri Architects, a WAC Honorary Member, has completed an office building in India with twisted and lifted corners to create a large landscaped courtyard within the building.

Named The Courtyard Office, the 88,660 square feet (8,236-square-metre) building is located in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, India

The design takes cues from traditional Indian courtyard houses, creating office spaces that vary in volume and in orientation.

The project is drawn as a linear office space that twists organically in plan, so that a large landscaped courtyard can be proposed within the building.

The building, varying from two to four levels sectionally, contains office floors that are lifted from the ground at the southwest and northeast sides to facilitate a south-westerly breeze through the courtyard.

The studio also elevates the northeast and northwest corners of the building to form singular large volumes at both ends. This creates a visual contact between floors, where a cafeteria and a library are housed.

"The circulation spine skirts the internal courtyard, allowing the landscape to be visible while moving through the office and the work areas, skirting the external periphery opening towards external gardens," said Sanjay Puri Architects.

"The building shape generates its longest sides oriented towards the north, with angled louvers on the other faces directing the internal spaces northwards."

"The orientation allows indirect light throughout the day into all of the internal spaces, rendering the building energy efficient," the office added.

As the studio emphasized, the concept of the Courtyard Office allows open spaces to be integrated with enclosed ones, and creating energy-efficient workspaces.
