Bjarke Ingels Group has added a new office building in Newcastle's skyline, the north east of England. Called No.1 Quayside, BIG's design will be the third building alongside Foster + Partners' Sage Gateshead Arts Centre and Wilkinson Eyre's Gateshead Millennium Bridg in the area. 

The project will be BIG’s first UK project outside of London. Stereo No. 1 Quayside aims to transform the patch of land on City Road and it will provide 100,000-square-feet of office space and create more than 1,000 jobs. 

The curved office building will reach 12-storey and it will include private gardens in every floor. The building's massing is derived from the site which follows the existing curve of the road and wraps to create a slender 13m ribbon-like office space that reflects the dynamic quality of it surroundings.

In the building, the rooftop acts as a fifth facade and winds down to create a string of linear garden terraces that are connected by a stair at the western edge serving as a secondary means fire egress and a linear park.

No.1 Quayside will be presented at next month’s MIPIM global property conference in Cannes.

"Our proposal is born from the unique conditions of Newcastle’s architectural elements, the sloping hills and the curvy frames of the bridges over the Tyne," said Bjarke Ingels. 

"The ascending serpentine silhouette feels like a fresh yet familiar continuation of this unique urban landscape."
