On, a Swiss brand producing running shoes, has designed its first self-sufficient mountain cabin in Swiss Alps, for hiking lovers and travelers. On was born in Swiss Alps and the company wanted to expand its business with a small and innovative project at the same place where the company was born.
Called The On Mountain Hut, the cabin was realized by Olivier Bernhard, Caspar Coppetti and David Allemann, are the co-founders of the brand of On. Situated between the towering Piz Lunghin mountain and stunning Lunghin pass, the hut lies in an area of Engadin/Bergell - the only only triple watershed in Europe.
"The water here flows into three major rivers: the Danube, the Rhine and the Po – which run into the Black Sea, the North Sea and the Mediterranean respectively. Even the location itself is a source - a stunningly beautiful source too," said the founders.
"We take great pride in bringing our ‘back yard’ to the world. That’s why we’ve built the On Mountain Hut. It is a symbol of our love for the Alps and our commitment to innovative design, it is our tribute to the remarkable terrain and our origins."
The two-storey cabin, seen above while being set up, is completely made up of self-sufficient materials and will leave no waste behind. A home for two, it is constructed from sustainable materials in keeping with the alpine setting.
The hut is powered by solar panels to create its own energy and uses natural rainwater. "We wanted it to have everything you need to get back to your source – back to nature – and nothing you don’t. Reduced to the maximum, distraction free," added the founders.
Covering a total of 18,95-square-meter, the interior of this simple hut is finished almost entirely with plywood, with the material used to create the walls, floors, and ceiling, along with a selection of simple tables.
"This was achieved by installing a unique roof fixture that could collect and filter rainwater for use, along with water collected and filtered from mountain streams. The zero-waste hut is clean and modern and designed to leave no trace behind after it is deconstructed in September."
Anyone is welcome to hike up the mountain to visit the hut, but only the winners of competitions hosted by On’s retail partners as well as its employees are allowed to stay overnight.
The On Mountain Hut was built as a tribute to the remarkable landscape and to share the source of their inspiration with the world. It also marks the launch of the Cloudrock Waterproof, On’s first-ever hiking shoe.
