ASAP releases design for rock-formed hotel tower in Downtown Los Angeles

US architecture firm Adam Sokol Architecture Practice (ASAP) has unveiled design for a rock-formed hotel tower in downtown Los Angeles, which will be a new typology of a hotel built in the city center.

Named Spring Street Hotel, the 15,000-square-metre hotel tower entirely resembles a huge rock form that is carved to create a rough texture and to seem as if it is naturally rising from the existing city fabric.

The hotel, situated in the core historic district of downtown Los Angeles, is aimed to design to accelerate growth and development of the downtown area as a business and tourism destination.

The design will build on its distinctive location and cultural context to create a landmark destination and memorable hospitality experience. The hotel will contain 170 guest rooms, including about 20 suites, situated on 27 floors.

Public spaces will include a roof bar with pool, fine dining restaurant, garden bar with film screen, banquet space, conference facilities including screening rooms, outdoor whirlpool, retail space, business center, and fitness center.

The architects take inspiration from the idea of a large rock in the landscape, drawing on a generation of land art in Los Angeles and the southwestern United States. The hotel tower benefits from the tension with the existing historic buildings to create a distinctive icon in the landscape, framed by outdoor public spaces adjacent to the entry.

The architects will use simple and modern materials in the interiors, such as concrete, wood and glass, with a design tailored to emphasize the hotel’s cultural program. The roof bar will be downtown Los Angeles’ highest outdoor public space, with panoramic views of the skyline and mountains.

Construction work is expected for the 28-story hotel tower in spring 2020 and expected to be completed in 2022.
