Canadian-born American starchitect Frank Gehry has won an international competition to design new Krakow Academy of Music complex in Krakow, which will be composed of new campus and concert hall for the new educational facilities of the school. Announced by the Krakow Academy of Music, the new campus will be designed on the land of a former military site located on the northeast side of the city along the Wisla at ul. Skrzatow 4 Grzegorzki.
The 160M Poland Zloty (approx. 40M USD)-proposal will function for the Academy of Music instruction facilities, featuring the main performance hall with the surrounding landscape.
The eight-person jury panel praised Frank Gehry's winning proposal for ''proposing a good integration'' to the site and jury described the project as ''original'' for the concert hall since it provides spiraling aerial views and ''provides new functional and acoustical possibilities.''
Gehry's proposal articulates buildings with skewed angles and protruding volumes, which look like windows or or volumes for skylight. Although multipartite buildings seem windowless, each units grow at the site by interlacing each other and feature silver-looking texture even though no specific material is described until now.
Frank Gehry and his crazy crew from Gehry Partners LLP described the project as ''a park of music'' and ''a distinct zone'' for the city. The jury specifically praised the architects' proposal for ''creating a nontraditional concert hall'', offering spiral views to the audience.
''The composition of the designed buildings of the Academy is created with a complex of pavilions respectfully introduced among the existing high vegetation. The proper zoning of the building and placement of entrances favor a clear separation between the public and educational spheres,'' noted the jury.
The official board plans to finalize the conceptual plans for the project in two years and planning followed by two years of actual construction. Frank Gehry's project selected among 10 anonymously submitted finalist entries.
The new Krakow Academy of Music complex is one part of an urban-revival masterplan and in addition to Frank Gehry's proposal, another building complex named the Kraków Philharmonic, Capella Cracoviensis and Sinfonietta Cracovia is currently being planned.
