Terrence Zhang's striking image of Swimming Pool named Best Architectural Photograph of the Year

This year, the Best Architectural Photography of the Year Award went to Terrence Zhang's striking image of the Swimming Pool at the New Campus of Tianjin University in China, which was designed by Chinese architecture firm Atelier Li Xinggang. Shanghai-based photographer Terrence Zhang defeated his rivals by taking the majority of votes by WAF's delegates at the World Architecture Festival for Arcaid Images Architectural Photography Awards, which was announced on the final day of WAF.

Arcaid Images Architectural Photography Awards, now celebrating its fifth year, aims to put the focus onto the skill and creativity of the photographer. The organisation asks the judges and the viewers to look beyond the architecture to the composition, light, scale, atmosphere, sense of place and understanding of the project.

Shortlisted photographs for the Architectural Photography Awards 2017 are exhibited at the World Architecture Festival at the Arena Berlin, Germany between 15-17 November 2017 and voted by WAF's delegates during the festival.

"Terrence Zhang’s photograph captures shafts of sunlight entering above the swimming pool and playing on the water. The image is framed beautifully by the curved ceiling arches of the structure’s roof," said WAF.

Supported by acoustics specialists Sto, the shortlisted entries, alongside the winning image, will feature at the Image+Space in Beijing, China from 11th November 2017 and Sto Werkstatt, London from 9th February 2018. Zhang will be rewarded with a $3,000 prize at the 'Building Images' exhibition at Sto Werkstatt, London in February.

Last year, Matt Emmett's Covered Reservoir was named as the Best Architectural Photography of the Year. Emmett's image shows one point perspective of bricked arches of the Covered Reservoir, Finsbury Park, London which was designed and built by East London Waterworks in 1868.

World Architecture Community is media partner for this year's World Architecture Festival. The annual World Architecture Festival (WAF) took place this year between 15-17 November at the Arena Berlin, in Germany.

World Architecture Community recorded some keynote sessions and presentations during the festival, as well as arranging short interviews with prominent architects including Peter Cook, Will Alsop, Murat Tabanlioglu and architectural historian and critic Olaf Bartels
