Vietnamese architecture studio Atelier.tho.A wrapped an old house with polycarbonate material to create a translucent skin and to protect the old house and add some new green space. Named FA House, the house was unused for more than 20 years since the owners of the house moved to another place.
When the owners of the house decided to return to the old house, they wanted to build a new house resembling the old one. But, the problem for the place was that the house was not be able to protect itself from sunlight or rain.
The architects used a polycarbonate material to create new translucent skin - the material was added to wrap the old structure protected the house from the direct impact of weather.
The blurry space in between the new and old layers appeared while filled with sunshine and green, by the way, it became similar to a typical greenhouse in this sunny-but-cool weather year-round highland.
"The house was unused for more than 20 years. Time changes, things change, people change. But memories remain unchanged," said Atelier.tho.A.
The architects slightly renovated the interior of the house according to the demands of the owners - some functions in the houses were kept as the same but some details were overhauled to form a modern look with elegant details. The original colour of the houses was protected for its new appearance.
The main structure of the house is perceived from outside, while new furnitures and layouts are designed in more flexible way. The architects used old tiles to pave walkway and to prevent planting water wet feet or shoes. All exterior doors of the house were made of recycle wood to be more durable in harsh weather conditions.
