New York-based architectures Diller Scofidio + Renfro create an off-beat exhibition for the Cartier Foundation. Caroline Roux takes a look

The New York architects Elizabeth Diller, Ricardo Scofidio and Charles Renfro are creators of unexpected experiences as much as buildings. They first wowed the architecture (and art) world with the Blur Building in 2002, a pavilion on an island in a Swiss lake made of fog. Then, when the High Lineopened in 2009 – their transformation of a disused elevated rail track into a prettily planted linear park on Manhattan’s west side – every one else sat up and paid attention too.

A couple of weeks ago, both Diller and Scofidio (partners in work and life) were in Paris, overseeing the opening of a new exhibition (Musings on a glass box) at the Cartier Foundation. And, as usual, it was a little off-beat. In one space a red bucket was gliding silently across the concrete floor, stopping every now and again to catch a drip from the ceiling, and always just in time. “It’s an intelligent bucket,” smiled Ricardo Scofidio. “Comic and sublime.” The sound of the drip resonated in the air.....Continue Reading
