A new edition of El Croquis was released this week, featuring work by David Chipperfield Architects between 2006-2014.
The bi-lingual 632-page issue is a consolidation of the two previous editions on the practice, covering projects from all four offices, with additional material and interviews by Juan Antonio Cortés, Emilio Tuñón and Rafael Moneo.
The interview that accompanies this new issue of El Croquis on David Chipperfield Architects attempts to continue the conversation of the three previous publications (including David Chipperfield 1991-1997, EL CROQUIS 87, El Escorial, 1997 / David Chipperfield 1998-2004, Dense Minimalism, EL CROQUIS 120, El Escorial, 2004 / David Chipperfield 2006-2010, Reconci- liation of Opposites, EL CROQUIS 150, El Escorial, 2010.) 1 visiting some of his latest work with the readers.
David Chipperfield also talks about the pragmatic mission of architecture comparing England with other countries and Chipperfield says that:
''I think probably the first important thing to say is that working in England and other Anglo-Saxon situations is quite different from working in Europe in that, generally, there is nearly a suspicion of intellectualism in England compared with Europe, where there is more patience and interest in discussing ideas. If one wants, these generalisations can be easily con- tradicted for being too simplistic, but I would say that the English gen- erally have some sort of pragmatic position.''
''Architecture in this country has, in a similar way to America, inher- ited a strong professional emphasis. So a schism tends to emerge very quickly between architectural practice and profession on the one hand, and discussion, ideas and contemplation on the other, and this schism seems quite extreme. You are either interested in building, in which case you go into practice, or you go into theory. That distinc- tion was absolutely clear in the 1980s. There wasn't so much work, so the polarity was very clear. And it continues to be clear.''
