Stephen Alton founded Stephen Alton Architect, P.C. in 1993 in New York City. The firm designs retail, residential and hotel projects worldwide. Alton and the collaborators at his firm possess a broad range of expertise in the fields of architecture and interior design, and have a background in the development of both large and small commercial and residential projects from inception through completion. They possess a deep-seeded philosophical and implemental commitment to each new project, and are known as innovators in lighting design, planning, and for their unique and sensitive uses of materials.

Stephen Alton, licensed in New York State, received a bachelor of fine arts degree and a professional degree in Architecture in 1984 and 1985, respectively, from the Rhode Island School of Design. Prior to founding Stephen Alton Architect, P.C., he worked in association with Rafael Viñoly Architects, Beyer Blinder Belle, and LBDA. Alton served as teaching assistant to various faculty members at RISD, including Peter Eisenman and James Indigo Freed. He often serves as a visiting critic at Columbia University’s School of Architecture, Pratt School of Design, Parsons School of Design, and The Rhode Island School of Design. He is a past faculty member of the Interior Design Department at Parsons School of Design.
