Francisco Spratley - Oporto - Portugal
*Working between Portugal and other countries developing and curating several projects in different areas within Art, Architecture and Design, defining the studio as a “laboratory of ideas”.
Education.
He obtained a degree in Architecture from the University Lusíada in Oporto (Portugal) in 2001. From 2005 to 2007, he held the Master’s degree “Architecture, Art and Ephemeral Spaces”, at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Barcelona (Spain) having presented his dissertation on “Recyclable scenographies”.
Architecture.
When he finished his degree, he went on to do his professional internship at RCR Aranda Pigem Vilalta arquitectes (Ptrizker 2017), an architecture studio in Olot (Spain), as an architect and where he spent more than 4 years as a team leader developing different projects and competitions. Then he moved to Barcelona (Spain) to pursue his master’s degree and work at the same time as an architect in the studio of Laia Escribà, developing several projects such as the Christian Escribà Showroom and a Nursery on the Costa Brava. In 2013, he moved to Shenzhen(China) to work at BLVD Int. Inc. as a senior architect in the interior department developing new concepts and space planning for different projects for the Hyatt hotel’s chain. From 2015 to 2017 he was Sales Ambassador for the Austrian eyewear brand Robert La Roche, where he was responsible for part of the European and International market. In 2017, he moved to Paris (France). Firstly he developed the interior design for the MR80 gallery and from there, he worked as a project manager in the Interface Studio, leading several projects in the design of canteens and restaurants.
Set designer for theatre, advertising, exhibitions and ephemeral installations.
For four years he designed sets, as assistant to art director Ana Alvargozalez, for several films such as: “El juego del ahorcado” by Manuel Gómez Pereira, “Les derniers jours du monde” by Arnaud & Jean Marie Larrieu. He was also an assistant for the scenographer Joan Galí, in the plays “True West” by Sam Shepard and “El feo” by Marius Von Mayenburg. He collaborated with event producer and set designer Adrian Smith on the proposal for the “Laureus World Sports Awards” in Barcelona (Spain).
Curator, designer and producer of art exhibitions and installations.
In 2009 he co-founded the Anywheredoor group, a non-profit association that aimed to exhibit contemporary Japanese architecture, where he designed and produced several exhibitions in Barcelona (Spain), Lisbon (Portugal), São Paulo (Brazil) and Buenos Aires (Argentina). From 2009 to 2012, he developed architectural education workshops for children, in collaboration with Arquikids Barcelona. In 2011, he was invited, in collaboration with the architect Tiago Borges, by the Consulate of Portugal in Barcelona to develop three exhibitions entitled “PortugalCriativo.jpg”; “Entre altres coses”; “Salão de Jogos”. In 2017, he developed the design of the exhibition “Editions Desjeux Delaye” for Paris Design Week in Paris(France).
Illustration and Photography.
Drawing and photography were always present in his career, even developing illustration as a parallel activity to his profession.
In college, he was always sketching and recording his travels and adventures. He was lucky enough to learn from his cousin artist Inês, the enchantment for watercolor and with her walking around the city of Porto, recording the corners of this enchanted city. He later worked as an illustrator for the Candle In brand, where he developed a series of illustrations. Currently, photography has assumed an increasingly important role, as his photographs were published in PARQ magazine, becoming a contributor to the magazine.
