The object of this competition was to create the Art Center of the Third Millenium, a multifunctional public building combining museum facilities, a building complex devoted to intercourse and knowledge and platforms for creative activity in all spheres of art.

The museum is conceived not only as a depository of cultural samples but also as a resource of information about culture in the widest sense of this word. The museum’s data base can be accessed from anywhere in the facility.

This proposal can be understood as a metaphor of the Neva River and its condition in the Gulf of Finland. Different aspects of the program, concept, and place are seen as opportunities to express the integration of autonomous parts.

The nature of the project considers the possibility of obtaining an aesthetic effect with a selection of smooth and porous materials with varying surfaces, in order to create a stimulating milieu--a world of forms and functions that invites the user to explore the space composition.

The singularity of this design lends itself to the search for a high level of flexibility in its functions. The services are elements used like architectonic tools that allow designers of future exhibitions to make modifications according to particular needs.

Special importance is given to the use of light conditions. Through the play between light and shade, the route through the museum becomes a unique experience.
