This project located in the Lujiazui area of Pudong District. Design task is the reconstruction of the Shanghai Oriental Hospital. After the expansion, the new building is located in the west side of the old building .The construction area is 81,802sqm and the beds number of the hospital will reach 1200 after the expansion. It also realizes seamless connection forming a whole with the old buildings, and achieves the most effective operation.

1.COMPACT, ECONOMICAL, MINIMIZED
Rigorous medical function matrix is the insuperable characteristic of modern hospitals in the machine age, and is also the eternal theme of modern hospital design research. If in Lujiazui financial center, time is money, then in hospital, time is life. Increasing efficiency requires compact space arrangement, close relationship and shortest distance between departments is the primary goal. The Oriental Hospital Project pursues the greatest economy under such a building height. After careful calculation, the maximum building area is achieved under the red line permissible condition, which is about 2000 square meters, which ensures enough available space for the new building.
At the same time, by setting up the escalators, staircases and elevators reasonably, it not only solves the transportation pressure of high building, but also avoids waste of valuable space. The form of architecture also shows hospital maintain a simple and quiet inner world for their work, and make the patients relax and release their body and mind.

2.SHARING, COEXISTENCE, SYMBIOSIS
The concept of “doctor pool floor” is introduced to create an area for academic exchange, meeting, and management, which is like a small kernel that radiates to the whole hospital and is relatively independent to minimize image center and roof garden and the more centralized medical resources, radiate more areas, and improve the utilization and effectiveness of resources.
The central garden located in the south makes the visitors suddenly break away from the bustle of Lujiazui and enter a peaceful and harmonious atmosphere. The separation of people and vehicles ensures tranquility apart from the outside world, which not only alleviates the parking pressure, but also greatly improves the hospital en- the concern for life.
For an ideal and efficient workflow the new building levels are in the same level then the existing building. this has the advantage that beds and goods, and especial handicapped peoples can transport/move between existing and new building in the same level, without any obstacles, like ramps or stairs. This reflects the idea of the target for reaching the “hospital unit”.
The new building looks like a traditional Chinese lantern, building stent looks like skeleton of lantern; glass like paper constructs the transparent building facade to ensure the indoor natural lighting, and also makes the building pure and elegant.

Building facade is not drab plane, continuous bay window belts chosen from inside make building flexible and elegant. Accordion surface has the effect of shading, ventilation, energy-efficient. In addition, the ups and downs of the facade create a certain space inside the building, the space is used to put flowers and plants. As if we use the garden “pieces” to reweave it into level garden system, covering the entire hospital.
Therefore, in the new building of Orient Hospital, it’s not an old wall between patients and the external world but green life symbolizing hope. This natural protective screen separates hospital from the external noisy environment of Lujiazui area, and reduces the noise pollution effectively.
The structured modular layout ensures the replaceability, compatibility and space renewal needs of hospital space allocation, and is also the most economical layout form.
On the processing of building interior interface, designers organize interior public space using the curving wall to replace linear wall, therefore such way softens sensory experience, appeases mood psychologically, and adjusts the relationship between human and hospital, helps to create a peaceful and safe medical environment.
Most internal public spaces and partition walls are endowed with light colors. These colors are consistent with the identification color of the departments. While helping guide medical guiding service, it provides more yearning for life in the internal medical space. Indoor and outdoor furniture collocation and landscape installation selection are more curvy, close to nature.

The entire Orient Hospital looks like as a garden medical village, self-contained and independent of the prosperous financial circle in Lujiazui, and in its dense skyscrapers we separate a quiet oasis for treatment and care. The green life surrounded by garden is a symbol of vitality, and conveys a feeling of hope...
