The Xinyue Art Gallery is located in the Xi'an, China. The design opens up what should be an internal atrium space to the outside, creating an outdoor atrium as a place for public activities, embodying the concept of "inside out." This approach is similar to Gordon Matta-Clark's architectural interventions, selectively presenting interior spaces to the external environment while concealing elements that may not be intended for display, thereby opening up the building in a constructive manner. The entire structure is composed of two staggered boxes, with the space beneath naturally serving as the entrance and exit for the residential area, and the juncture along the path is the focal point where the space is opened up.
Firstly, the design does not seek complexity through interlaced walls to express spatial autonomy but emphasizes the contrast in weight between volumes through the intersection space after volume Boolean operations. This design technique not only enhances the coherence of the space but also makes the architectural form more concise and powerful. With carefully calculated volume layout, each part of the building perfectly displays its function and aesthetic appeal.
Secondly, the structural design cleverly echoes the volume layout, using large-span cantilever beams to allow certain parts of the building to float, creating a light and elegant visual effect.
In terms of material selection and application, we deliberately avoided excessive decoration and detailed carving, opting instead for large pieces of stone to be joined together, showcasing the building's original and simple beauty. The use of such materials not only enhances the texture of the building but also makes it closer to nature, coexisting harmoniously with the surrounding environment.
In landscape design, carefully planned paths guide people's gaze and steps, allowing them to appreciate the building's outer corridors and courtyards as they walk. This design not only improves the spatial guidance but also adds interest and exploratory nature to the space.
Currently, the interior space is used as an art center, but it will transform into a community center in the future. It is imaginable that when the exhibition center becomes the core of community activities, elderly people will gather in groups to play chess in the courtyard, enjoying a leisurely afternoon; young people will chat and rest on the second-floor terrace after exercising, sharing their stories; children will chase and play in the courtyard, filling the entire yard with laughter and joy. These fragments of daily life will make this design more closely connected to people's lives, truly integrating into the community's pulse. When the design is closely connected with people's daily lives, it is not just a static space but has become a vibrant and warm community living place.
