The Womb Cultural Center / Unbuilt Project
The Womb is a conceptual cultural center designed for Java Island in Amsterdam.
This project draws inspiration from the metaphor of the womb a place where future generations, creative energy, and free thought are formed and nurtured. The building’s dynamic and organic structure transforms notions of introspection, imagination, and transformation into an architectural language.
A horizontally oriented elongated volume forms the heart of the center. It houses a conservatory, studios, a public library, auditoriums, a musical instrument museum, bookstores, exhibition halls, and shared offices. This structure is accompanied by an open-air concert venue.
Natural light filters through skylights placed along the ceiling, while rooftop terraces open to the view and establish a ritualistic connection between space and spectator. The materials metal mesh, precast concrete, and elevated timber platforms give the structure a tactile and grounded character.
The concert hall is composed of a series of interconnected forms. The overall composition resembles a blooming organism. At the core, a vertical red spine symbolizes the ascension of the soul through artistic performance, representing the liberation of the human spirit through the transformative power of creativity.
Though unbuilt, The Womb is conceived with full architectural intent a spatial fiction that reflects on memory, potential, and freedom.
P.S.All visuals were created without the use of AI. The drawings were hand-rendered using a digital tablet and Photoshop as part of the project's conceptual development
