Our ambition is to redefine the national library by breaking down the closed and isolated program of the library and create a new library that allows all users to interact and experience the library.
The national library will mediate, organise and file the knowledge, culture and history, as are its present functions. But the sustainability of the future national library depends on its ability to communicate with the public. The future national library is to be defined by a new interface, a new concept and a new architecture.
The national library has transformed from being an isolated box of books to becoming a cultural institution that takes care of an endless variety of cultural and publicly related tasks. Hence the contents of the library have changed dramatically.
The library is to contain a new and extensive umbrella of culture; exhibitions, magazines, news-reading rooms, restaurants, lecture and concert spaces multi purpose spaces etc. Thereby the conventional perception of the library and the programmatical limitations can be redefined. The library is interactive; it communicates with its user interface and makes it possible to navigate smoothly. The new library combines interactive user interfaces with visual contact and a logistically disposed architecture. The intention is to create a cultural institution that doesn’t only appeal to the narrow group of literates and students, but to the entire Czech public. The archive becomes the nations collective memory on which the nation and the individual can nurture and develop.
