The objective of the project is to perform the design of the production and management structure of the Taiwanese stainless steel company investing in Turkey. The main targets in the construct of the building were to ensure that employees work efficiently and willingly in a high-quality and prestigious environment and to facilitate the connections between production and management, and to achieve the criteria of energy efficiency, sustainability, waste management, and the optimisation of the process flow. Also, the building’s entrance angles, spatial relations, form, colour, the use of natural elements, and the expectation for a respectful building that encourages productive and good relations, all of which have been considered in accordance with the rules of Feng shui, to which the Company attaches importance, set the direction for the design.
The fact that the building is a factory building necessitates the implementation of many standards and process requirements. In fact, it does not become easily possible to allow flexibility to the form.
The management and social areas offer the architecture the opportunities to create a difference. The entrance section was designed in soft lines in a manner that softens the rigid corners and draws the architectural interest of the building, being placed in the water element. Social areas were created for employees with the garden delineated by the bridge created to reveal the basement, water cascades and the amphitheatre area.
The request for creating a perception of high-prestige for the building lay under the principle of removing the guests from the hustle of the production area. The entrance canopy that covers the guest parking lot was used to achieve that purpose. Placing the electronic reception board on which the arriving guests’ names appear over the entrance gate, the guests are directed to the building over a lengthy walkway. In the meanwhile the guest is prepared for surprising effects at each step through the use of landscaping, water and architectural elements.
With its spacious and monumental appearance, the entrance to the building was designed to allow the company, which is an art collector, to exhibits its works. The red staircase placed in the gallery space pointing at the deep-perspective view, the garden, and the play of water attracts the gaze on all floors thanks to its monumental appearance.
The stainless steel material, which they produce, enriches the details in interior and exterior spaces.
The production floor that was designed as a basement floor thanks to the idea of the viaduct ramp placed at the long façade at the production side was altogether freed from the need to construct revetments and colossal fillings. Thanks to the viaduct that was placed at a distance from the building, the basement turned into practical solution whose production and maintenance is easy, which has a fully visible front, and which receives the daylight. It was also possible to create social areas and open storage areas dedicated to the floor underneath the viaduct.
In planning, the establishment of the functional relationship of blue- and white-collar employees, who are the users of the building, with each other and the production and office areas in the most practical manner was prioritised. Employee entrances, dressing, laboratory and training areas, the spaces reserved for operation managers and technical office employees were placed at the optimal distances and floors in relation to the production and shipping areas, also to allow visual access between these areas. The measurements of the vehicle manoeuvre and weighing areas, the doors places in accordance with the process, the horizontal and vertical lifting elements, and the placement of the cranes that expedite the operation were detailed in a manner that impacts efficiency and the speed of production.
The refectory area, neighbouring the garden, was placed as suitable for social use. The amphitheatre steps designed as suitable for outdoor presentations, the semi-open areas providing shade, and the cooling and relaxing play of water constitute the socialising areas that strengthen the ties within the company.
The objective was to create a memorable and prestigious existence that makes its presence felt in its environment when compared to its peers as a factory building, that arouses interest, and that inspires an enthusiasm to work.
The building creates a difference with the social areas made possible by the façade of the basement that is revealed in both directions, the use of the open areas, the façade interpretations that allow plenty of daylight, the spacious interior space solutions, and the solutions that bolster up occupational safety in connection with wastes and hazardous operations.
The primary expectation from the design was to achieve a high-quality living space where the company’s strength, vision, expertise, the importance attached to quality, and the value given to employee satisfaction could be felt.
Creating a happy and highly-motivated team by offering the employees a unique work environment where work is performed efficiently and the sense of belonging is strong was a priority target of the vision.
Ultimately, it was satisfying to observe the contribution made by the design to quickly achieving the targeted employee quality.
The company is excited that it has been able, sooner than expected, to receive positive responses to the messages it wished to give to its target market, customers, employees, and the environment through this investment it made quite far away from its homeland. It is believed that the investment sets an example that inspires the sector.
The importance attached to energy efficiency and insulation, the recovery of process heats, the recycling of process waste, making use of daylight, and the recovery of rainwater and grey water ensure sustainability.
The choice of high-quality glazing and mesh blinds created in order to take advantage of daylight and increase thermal and acoustic quality ensures comfort and energy saving. The water element used in the open spaces was employed to provide a cool environment thanks to the micro-climate it creates in the heat of summer.
