The quality of lighting in a space gives definition to its character and creates impressions. The human eye perceives an architectural form through the incidence and reflection of light and in that way acquires information about the ambience. Visual impressions are interpreted in our brains and put in context to create emotions that move us to take particular actions.
Light forms base of photography. One cannot imagine photography without light. Light defines everything in photography. The color, direction, Quality and quantity of the light you use determine how subject appears.
It hence made sense to bring these two light-based fields together, which formed the thought behind designing ‘School of Photography;
(Using light in various forms gives a great scope for creativity and most of all; it is environmentally friendly since sunlight is a renewable source of energy. Using light directly during daytime makes more sense, since manufacturing equipment using solar energy to produce electricity has a high carbon footprint. Using existing light was an important motivation too.)
The seed of this project lies in an effort to understand the phenomena of architecture via designing a school of photography for aspiring professionals. The concept and physical form of the design is rooted in the concept of light and shadow. The design serves to signify the ultimate representation of photography which results in a symbolic dialogue between the viewer and the depicted building. The means of dissecting this aspect came through a passion for photography.
