BERGAMO CULTURE AND PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE Design Architect: ALESSANDRO ROLLINO Collaborators: SANDRO PANARESE, MICAELA TOLIO_In order to design a contemporary space, we must focus our attention on the transforming forces that rule global and local relationships. If we deal with forces instead of forms we have good chance to correctly anticipate future urban scenarios.
Keeping this in mind, with this project we wanted to give new strength to the historical urban context of Bergamo, thus we analyzed the territorial system at any scale { from international to local }, and we tried to put it inside a network of relations and events that could find a proper location in such a peculiar place. Use and perception of those spaces, were materialized into the new building: “Bergamo Culture and Performing Arts Centre”.
To obtain the best possible integration with the existing landscape we pursued the following planning actions: a} existing park entering the new building; b} green extension by means of a continuous indoor/outdoor wooden decking; c} existing plaza entering the new building; d} space as a “continuum” among plaza, castle, park, and the building: people can freely walk across different spatial situations without any physical boundary; e} direct connection between the outdoor “stage” of the castle and the new building by means of a “promenade architecturale” ; f} roofscape: people can walk upon the roof at different levels so that they can have new and different panoramic views of the city.
