CAMPUS EXPANSION WITHOUT ENVIRONMENTAL DIMINUTION:
As a part of the 60th anniversary of the University of the West Indies, The University Bookshop, formerly a single storey building at the Mona Campus, was extended to facilitate contemporary activities and electronic interface. The challenge was to double the existing 5,000 square foot space, and allow for future expansion at a later date. This was done by building upward and completely spanning the existing building pulling and pushing to create volume and rhythm over the existing rectangular structure. The expansion upward helped to retain the green spaces, especially within the vicinity of the principal entrances into the Campus. Environmental factors were integrated into the design utilizing its orientation for shading effects and overhangs from sun with heat reduction glazing that still allowed for interior exterior relationships between the Bookshop and the rest of the Campus against the backdrop of the mountains.
