CAN ARCHITECTS GIVE A CLIENT A HOUSE OF THEIR DREAMS VERSUS THE ARCHITECT’S DREAM? That is what we did for the Hemmings Residence completed late 2007. It is nestled in the hills of Montego Bay angled around vistas of the Sea rippling with its ever-changing blue hues. Our clients who are doctors presented a scrapbook of their favourite architectural elements including an “obelisk” and we used these to create an eclectic blend utilizing traditional tropical features, material, and craftsmanship into a 5,000 square foot house with a central open-air courtyard that internally replicated the motion of the sea in texture, colour, and rhythm. Intentionally designed with an indoor-outdoor relationship, the natural finishes of hardwoods, granite, and porcelain within the volumetric rooms define a spacious Caribbean open feel with natural ventilation and play of daylight benefiting from careful orientation of the architecture that survived two active hurricane seasons.
