In the process of creation an error may be a turning point. It may stimulate innovation and chart new directions or bring an unexpected success. A system error, a spot, a wrong color, a material that has reacted in an unpredictable way – in designing all that falls outside the simple division into 'right' and 'wrong', 'useful' and 'useless'. The notion of error allows us to examine the designer's thinking process and dynamics of creation. It serves as a skeleton key to the usually closed doors to design workshops and production plants.
'To err is' in the BWA Gallery of Modern Art in Tarnów shows in how wide and non-standard way that skeleton key operates; how it allows to analyze the standards, categories and crucial moments of designing, making it possible to see the design icons as much more than merely nice, popular objects and solutions. It is a means of gaining an insight into history and future of things.
