Nunzio Gabriele Sciveres&StudioTamassociati winners of the 2013 Barbara Cappochin Prize

Nunzio Gabriele Sciveres’s A2M Social Housing complex, in Ragusa, Sicily, is winner of the 2013 international Barbara Cappochin Prize. This project, initiated in collaboration with Maria Giuseppina Cannizzo, was selected unanimously by the jury that considered it to be not only a beautiful piece of sea-front architecture but an aesthetic, social and cultural decision. This project confirms that architecture can provide solutions to the fundamental problems of contemporary living.

Three honourable mentions and a special jury mention were awarded to: Barge Bouza Arquitectura (Spain), Inaqui Carnicero (Spain), Avanto Architects LtD (Finland), Tam & Videgard Arkitekter (Sweden).

The young Venetian studio TAMASSOCIATI, led by architects Massimo Lepore, Raul Pantaleo, Simone Sfriso, is winner of the Giancarlo Ius* Gold Medal, awarded for an innovative, sustainable and high-energy performance construction. The winning project is an emergency paediatric centre in Port Sudan that, using simple construction technology, responds to the chief programme requirements: patients’ comfort as well as that of the hospital staff, temperature control, energy and water management.

Leopoldo Freyrie, Chairman of the jury, applauded the success of the young architects that represents hope for the future of the profession and saluted the initiative of the Barbara Cappochin Foundation that, since 2005, reveals skillful talent through its biennial awards programme.

The official prize-giving ceremony took place at the opening of the Architecture Biennial in Padua, on 9th September 2013.
