The 4th International Holcim Awards competition celebrates projects and visions that contribute to a more sustainable built environment and features total prize money of USD 2 million.
The competition is open for projects in architecture, building and civil engineering, landscape and urban design, materials, products and construction technologies that contribute to the five “target issues” for sustainable construction. The competition has two categories with different requirements.
Holcim Awards (main category)
- Project has reached an advanced stage of design with high probability of execution
- Execution of the project may not have started before July 1, 2013
- All authors must be at least 18 years of age (date of birth March 24, 1996 or earlier)
"Next Generation" (young professionals and students category)
- Visionary projects and bold ideas
- All authors must be between 18 and 30 years of age (date of birth between July 2, 1982 and March 24, 1996)
- Execution of the project may not have started before July 1, 2013
Evaluation process
Renowned technical universities lead the independent juries in five regions of the world. They evaluate entries against the “target issues” for sustainable construction.
Prizes
The total prize money for each cycle of the Holcim Awards competitions (regional and global levels) is USD 2 million.
Regional prizes
- The total prize money for each of the five regional Holcim Awards competitions is USD 330,000
- Holcim Awards Gold USD 100,000; Holcim Awards Silver USD 50,000; Holcim Awards Bronze USD 30,000
- Holcim Awards Acknowledgement prizes from a total budget of USD 100,000 per region; maximum of 6 prizes, maximum individual prize sum of USD 25,000
- “Next Generation” prizes from a total budget of USD 50,000 per region: Holcim Awards “Next Generation” 1st prize USD 25,000, Holcim Awards “Next Generation” 2nd prize USD 15,000, and Holcim Awards “Next Generation” 3rd prize USD 10,000
Global prizes
- The prize money of the Global Holcim Awards competition is USD 350,000
- Global Holcim Awards Gold USD 200,000; Global Holcim Awards Silver USD 100,000; Global Holcim Awards Bronze USD 50,000
- Global Holcim Awards winners are selected from the 15 regional Holcim Awards Gold, Silver and Bronze recipients
All prizes are subject to the positive outcome of a verification process to check project eligibility and compliance with local and international laws and regulations.

- Close of registration: March 24, 2014 at 14:00hrs GMT

- Jury meetings by region: June to July, 2014
- Awards ceremonies by region: September to November, 2014 to be held in Moscow, Russia (for region Europe), Toronto, Canada (North America), Medellín, Colombia (Latin America), Beirut, Lebanon (Africa Middle East) and Jakarta, Indonesia (Asia Pacific)

Juries
After a centrally-performed technical pre-assessment, regional juries will evaluate and rank the respective entries. The juries consist of independent, renowned representatives from science, business and society. Each regional jury meeting is hosted by a partner university of the Holcim Foundation.
