“Thereis no doubt that the architecture and method of building in Zlín in thefirst half of the last century remains a phenomenon which has no pointof comparison in post-war Czechoslovakia, nor on the European scale,possibly not even on a global scale”Pavel Novák, architect, from the book “A model industrial city: Zlín 1900-1950”Zlínis an unique example of a town developed in the period between 2 WorldWars as a complex urban, architectural and social model which wasattached to a large industrial production unit. Built by a self madeindustrialist, Tomáš Bata and his step brother Jan – both local menwith no education or skill to start with – the town of Zlín representedat the onset of the Second World War a very well organised industrialtown of a high architectural quality, for which it is still renowned.Alecture presented by one of Zlín’s most famous figures, the worldrenowned architect Eva Jiricná, will introduce New Yorkers to thearchitecture of Zlín, from the unique constructions of the Bata era upuntil the present, as the City continues to re-create itself with newbuildings such as the unique complex of the Congress and UniversityCentre, sustaining the architectural quality for which it is stilladmired.Thelecture is accompanied by a photography exhibition on Zlín, which willportray the city in terms of its geography, history, culture, andcommerce.
