Irish developer Glenkerrin has slashed back its Foster +Partners/HKR designed scheme for Arcadia Shopping Centre in EalingBroadway.Under the drastically reworked scheme, which was unveiled lastFriday, a new slimline tower, designed by Foster + Partners, has takenthe place of the practice`s original 40-storey Leaf building {pictured}.The scheme`s `finger blocks` have also been scaled down as part ofGlenkerrin`s aim to reduce the height of towers throughout the schemeby around 40 per cent; in addition, the HKR housing element has alsobeen reduced from 700 homes to 560.The step-down follows fierce opposition from campaign group Save Ealing`s Centre, as well as from CABE and English Heritage. The chief executive of Glenkerrin, Ray Grehan, told the Ealing Post:`Local people expressed a range of concerns when we presented ourinitial proposals. We have listened and taken on board the comments.`At the time neither HKR nor Foster + Partners was available for comment.
