Capital accumulates capital, architecture is an accumulation of parts, architecture is part of the process of capital accumulation. We seek an effort to go back to earlier interpretations of accumulation – to cumulate – such that the generic ‘amassing’ becomes more purposeful ‘combining’. Accumulation hosts artists, performers, academics and writers to reflect on the notion of ‘accumulation’ in relation to the city and ask how we might, can and do move beyond the circle of capital.

Alice Honor Gavin is a Fellow at the ICI Berlin Institute for Cultural Inquiry. Her book about literature, film, and interiority’s loss, Literature and Film, Dispositioned, will be published by Palgrave in September, while her book about the construction and collapse of an inner city ring road, Midland, will be published by Penned in the Margins soon after. In the meantime she’s singing pop songs.

Christien Garcia is a writer and researcher currently pursuing a PhD at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada. His research uses psychoanalytic theory to consider intimate space and recessive phenomena such as silence and stillness in literature and film.

Adam Kaasa is a researcher and writer who specialises in the politics of the city, foregrounding the role of architecture and design. His interests include critical and urban theory to consider public space, the postcolonial, and negotiations of capital in late modernity as they touch ground in the practices of architecture.

Jack Tan makes work that explores the connection between the political or social and art. Prior to retraining as a potter and artist, Jack had a background in law, social policy and the voluntary sector. Jack currently teaches performance at the University of Roehampton where he is also researching the performativity of political resistance in his PhD.

Richard Whitby is an artist and writer from Liverpool. His videos use improvised acting, rough props and DIY animation to expand upon and challenge existing narratives — be they ideological, mythic or historical. He is currently completing a PhD with the London Consortium, on ‘arena spectaculars’ within post-cinematic media and British urban regeneration. In 2013 he worked with Dave Charlesworth and Focal Point Gallery on a publication and video, and his film ‘Childe of Hale’ will be showing in summer 2014. He was a LUX Associate Artist in 2012/13. He lives and works in London

Kapital Architecture is a four-part public debate series exploring architecture through the lens of the 2014 London Festival of Architecture theme: Capital. It runs the 3, 12, 19 and 25 June. The series adopts four key concepts to examine architectural practice and production through its historical and contemporary relationship with capital: Circulation, Labour, Commodity and Accumulation.
