Wynwood Gateway Park Competition Finalists Announced!

Metro 1 Announces Finalists for the Imagine, Design and Build Competition

11 teams from around the world were chosen as finalists to submit their designs for the Wynwood Gateway Park

Metro 1 – Miami’s leading forward-thinking full-service real estate organization – announced three days ago the 11 finalists invited to present their designs for the Wynwood Gateway Park. The contest that began in May, received 238 portfolio entries from 23 different countries from as far away as Bahrain, China, Iran,  Spain, England, France, Montenegro, India,  Italy, Mexico, Germany, Japan, Dominican Republic, Colombia and Australia.

 

The 11 finalists selected are:

An independent team from Miami consisting of artist Jim Drain, landscape architect Roberto Rovira and architect Nick Gelpi,  AGENCY Architecture LLC and Aranda/Lasch from New York City, New York;Solid Objectives – Idenburg Liu  /  SO-IL and stpmj from Brooklyn, New York;  Meyer + Silberberg – Land Architects from Berkeley, California;  SFA fromMadrid, Spain; Colour: Urban Design Limited and Wayward Plants from London, England, AZC – Atelier Zundel Cristea from Paris, France and ONZ Architects from Ankara, Turkey.

Participants now have 8 weeks to submit their plans for an urban park and garden on the Metro-1 developed retail complex. The winning design will be built and implemented by winter 2014 as part of Phase II of the commercial development that serves as the entryway to the vibrant Wynwood neighborhood. First place will also receive $10,000 in prize money, second – $5,000 and third – $2,500. The winning design will be announced on August 29.

These finalists were chosen by esteemed panel of expert judges including: Enrique Norten – Founding Principal, TEN Arquitectos; Terrance Riley – Principal, Keenan/Riley; Former Director of Miami Art Museum and Museum of Modern Art; Raymond Jungles, ASLA – FASLA, PLA, Founding Principal of Raymond Jungles, Inc.; Allan Shulman FAIA, Principal, Shulman + Associates; James Russell, FAIA, architecture critic and journalist; Andrew Frey – Development Manager, Codina Group; Founder, DawnTown;Tony Cho – CEO and Founder, Metro 1 and Moderator- Joachim Perez, Executive Director of DawnTown.

The competition  was conceived by neighborhood visionary and Metro 1 President and CEO, Tony Cho, in partnership with DawnTown, a non-pro?t organization dedicated to promoting architecture in Miami and AIA Miami, the local chapter of The American Institute of Architects, with the goal of creating a dynamic 14,000-square-foot space that offers the local community, visitors and tourists a place to come together and enjoy the neighborhood in a public environment. It is located at 2825 NW 2nd Avenue in Miami.

“We were thrilled with the caliber and global diversity of entries,” said Cho. “It demonstrates how Miami – Wynwood in particular – continues to rise to prominence for its artistic and culturally significant identity.”

The Wynwood Gateway Park Imagine, Design and Build Competition is the latest initiative of M1 Community, Metro 1’s designated philanthropy division.
