Peter Eisenman (b. 1932), architect, theorist, and educator, stands as a principal figure of reference for architectural theory in North America during the last decades. He is also the architect of ambitious and culturally significant projects: City of Culture at Santiago de Compostela in Spain, the Berlin Memorial for the Murdered Jews of Europe in Germany (dedicated in 2005), and the Arizona Cardinals Stadium in the United States (2006).

In 1967 Eisenman founded the Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies (IAUS) in New York, which, together with the journal Oppositions begun by Eisenman in 1974, became a catalyst for architectural debate and played a definitive role in the emerging theorisation of architecture in the US after 1970.

In the 1990s Eisenman founded the Anyone Corporation, a think tank organized to engage debate about the cultural condition of architecture at the end of the 20th century through conferences and the magazine ANY.

Eisenman has published his essays widely in journals, and his books have been translated into a number of languages. TheCCA has compiled a complete list of publications by and about Peter Eisenman from 1960 to 1999.

Eisenman has taught at Cambridge, Princeton, Harvard, Yale, and Ohio State universities, and at the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture at the Cooper Union for the advancement of Science and Art in New York City.

Since 1968, Eisenman’s work has been featured in more than 80 exhibitions internationally, including Cities of Artificial Excavation at the CCA in 1994.

The Peter Eisenman Archive at the CCA documents all of Eisenman’s activities as an architect, teacher, and author in over 60,000 drawings, prints, models, and photographs, and 170 linear feet of records documenting more than 200 projects covering his practice from 1960 to 2007. In addition to conceptual drawings in his own hand, the archive holds hundreds of design development models and thousands of born-digital, computer-aided drawings.

Related archival holdings include the entire IAUS archive, which contains the complete archive of the journal Oppositions, and the Anyone Corporation archive, comprising over 4,300 photographs and non-print materials (video and audio recordings, electronic documents, and ephemera) dating from 1990 to 2001, including the records of ANY magazine.
