Three new schools are among the eight winners of this year’s RIBA West Midlands Regional Awards
Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios’ brick-clad Tudor Grange Academy, the ‘vibrant and playful’ Waverley Schoolby Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, and a primary school inAshpertonby Herefordshire-based Warren Benbow Architects were chosen from an initial shortlist of 11 schemes.
Unsurprisingly Mecanoo’s ‘impressive and bold’ Library of Birmingham bagged both a regional gong and the region’s Building of the Year Award, while Birmingham City Council took home the Client of the Year award for its role on the £189 million library.
Other winners included Grimshaw’s ‘exemplar, warm and welcoming’ Stoke-on-Trent Bus Station and a new home for Birmingham School of Architecture, which was described by judges as ‘rational and considered’.
The region’s Emerging Architect of the Year Award was picked up by Patrick Arends, an associate at Mecanoo for his part in the award-winning building.
Regional winners will be put forward for the RIBA National Awards, with the lucky recipients announced in June.
