Design Competition for the Specialized Street Development of Haengbok-ro Alleyway Market

As part of the “Enhancing the Dignity of Gyeonggi-do Traditional Markets” project, this competition aims to move away from uniform modernization schemes of traditional markets. Instead, it seeks to strengthen the competitiveness of traditional markets and revitalize the local economy through place-specific planning that reflects local identity, history, and distinctiveness, while harmonizing with the surrounding context.

Located in Uijeongbu City, the Haengbok-ro Alleyway Market is both a central commercial hub and a pedestrian-only street with heavy foot traffic. The project seeks to maximize its potential by creating a distinctive themed street, connecting fragmented market zones, and developing a cultural and artistic hub that can host diverse events.

Through innovative and creative designs for arcades and kiosks, the project aims to organically connect commercial areas, attract internal and external visitors, inject vitality into the space, and establish the market as a global tourist destination.

Given the project’s nature, the design process will involve close consultation and discussion with the client. Therefore, this competition does not require or evaluate fully completed design proposals. Instead, it emphasizes the designer’s understanding of the project direction, creativity, originality, and professional competence, with the goal of selecting a capable team suitable for technical and professional execution.
