Wrocław-based interior design studio Znamy sie has completed a coastal-inspired patisserie in Warsaw, Poland.
Named Pastelowe, the 63-square-metre patisserie is a distinctive pastry shop on Warsaw's Solec, transports visitors to a Portuguese surf camp with its specialty dish, "pastéis de nat", called custard tarts.
Every element of this beach-inspired area, from the genuine taste of the creamy tart to the ambiance that permeates it, offers a tale of sun, waves, and carefree mornings on the Atlantic.
The idea for the bakery emerged from the excitement of surfing, which its founders experienced while on vacation. The design team discovered three different forms of surf waves after researching their anatomy: reef break, point break, and beach break.
The rounded shapes of the mirrors and benches that divide the area represent the softness and safety of a beach-break wave.
While the undulating, tunnel-like counter symbolizes the dynamic energy of a reef-break wave, the rhythmic shelf formations on the walls mirror the fluidity and organized strength of a point-break wave.
Despite its small size, the counter's shape and the way it is laid out encourage people to freely engage with their environment. In doing so, the interior of Pastelowe not only acquires a unique personality but also conveys a tale of the power and diversity of ocean waves.
The interior of Pastelowe uses a palette of gentle colors and natural textures to evoke the mood of Portuguese beaches. While shiny steel and foil surfaces evoke the glimmer of breaking waves, warm oak timber evokes sandy beaches.
Even on overcast days, the room feels bright because to the yellow spray foam covering the entire ceiling, which has an uneven texture that resembles frothy water.
The entire space is brought to life by rich marine blue accents that are reflected in metallic features and used in the bakery's branding.
The Pastelowe project combines an architectural story of ocean waves with a love of real custard tarts.
The interior speaks of dreams, craftsmanship, and the allure of the Portuguese shore thanks to well-selected materials, a subdued color scheme, and a well-considered spatial arrangement. It provides a brief respite from the bustle of everyday life in Warsaw to a vacation filled with sunshine.
