Finalists announced for the Design Of Two New Moscow Metro Stations In Moscow

On June 2, during its first meeting the competition jury, chaired by Deputy Mayor of Moscow in the Moscow Government for Urban Planning Policy and Construction Andrei Bochkarev, selected 10 finalists (five for each station) for the International Competition for architectural and artistic designs for stations on two new branches of the Moscow Metro, Prospekt Marshala Zhukova on the Rublyovo-Arkhangelskaya line and the station with the working name Klenoviy Bulvar 2 on the Biryulevskaya Line.

10 teams were chosen, three international consortiums and seven Russian architectural firms.

"The competition saw 78 bids submitted from 12 countries. This is 50% more submissions than for a similar competition in 2018. Registrants came from all corners of the globe, for a total of 330 competitors. Of that number, 52 were individual applications, and 61 were on behalf of 26 multinational consortiums, including companies from Great Britain, Hungary, Germany, Spain, Italy, China, Latvia, the Netherlands, Poland, Uzbekistan and even Japan," said Andrei Bochkarev, Deputy Mayor of Moscow in the Moscow Government for Urban Planning Policy and Construction, Chairman of the Jury.

"In previous competitions the Asia Pacific region was not represented, although there was participation from South America (Argentina). Application statistics for the competition showed a clear increase in interest on the part of international specialists in taking part in Moscow-based projects."

When selecting finalists on the basis of their submission, relevant portfolio materials as well as an essay and attached visuals, the jury paid particular attention to the relationship between the competitors’ proposed designs and the architectural, cultural and historical context of the neighborhoods surrounding the stations. The jury evaluated proposals’ ability to satisfy the needs of all types of passengers as well as modern day technological requirements.

The jury selected the following finalists:

For Klenoviy Bulvar 2:

For Prospekt Marshala Zhukova:

"We have completed an important step in the competition. We have selected 10 finalists to design the planned Klenovy Bulvar and Prospekt Marshala Zhukova stations. It was not an easy choice, all of the project proposals had very interesting designs and have a real possibility of being realized in the future," said Sergei Kuznetsov, Chief Architect of Moscow, Deputy Chairman of the Jury.

"I want to underscore that along with experienced architects and international industry leaders, some very young teams also became finalists. It’s great to transportation planning specialists like Timur Bashkayev and international stars working together in the consortium led by Zaha Hadid Architects."

For the second stage of the competition finalists will revise their designs to meet broader technical requirements for the project then present their final plans to the jury. The jury will select a winner for each metro station at its final meeting based on who submits the best final concept.

Winners will have the opportunity to accept a contract for the development of a booklet on the station’s architectural and urban planning solutions to obtain a “Certificate of approval for the architectural and urban solution for a capital construction project” and supervision of design and construction work on their proposal.

Final results will be announced during the final jury meeting on August 20, 2020.

About the competition objects

“Prospekt Marshala Zhukova” is an interchange station, connecting two Metro lines – Bolshaya Koltsevaya Line and Rublevo-Arkhangelskaya Line. The station will be located in the area of Khoroshevo-Mnevniki of the North-West Administrative Okrug (NWAO).  It will be designated as a key transit point for residents of the district. The station is located at the junction of Demyana Bednogo Street at the intersection with Marshall Zhukov Avenue. The station complex will be located on a section of the deep-lying Metro line. In accordance with the project, two single-track tunnels approach the station, resulting in the station being designed with a single island transfer platform.

As well as the obvious transport and logistical advantages for residents of Nagatinsky Zaton, a feature of this station is to provide the necessary connectivity of Kuryanovo and Biryulevo districts, as well as convenient access to the Kolomenskoye Museum Reserve. The station is located at Klenovy Boulevard at the intersection with Kolomenskaya Street, and the station complex will be located on a section of the subsurface Metro line.
