The Estonian Centre for Architecture has announced that the next year's 6th edition of Tallinn Architecture Biennale (TAB) has been postponed until 2022.
The ongoing curatorial competition for the next biennale will continue with the same deadline 29th of May 2020.
Organisers of the TAB, which is considered the region's biggest international architecture and urban planning festival, announced the decision to postpone TAB until 2022 due to the postponement of the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale as well as the uncertain times that international cultural events are facing because of the coronavirus outbreak.
"The peculiar times we live in has given us an extra year for the organisers and the head curator to prepare for the upcoming edition of TAB. This ensures enough time for a high quality theme and a comprehensive programme. We hope that the teams who are participating in the curatorial competition understand the decision and are ready to contribute also in 2022," said Raul Järg, the Director of Estonian Centre for Architecture.
The postponement will not affect the ongoing competition for the next head curator or the deadline for developing the concept of the biennale and submitting the corresponding draft in writing, which is on 29 May 2020 4PM Estonian time.
The competition is held in 2 stages. Stage I consists of submitting the competition project in writing and stage II is an oral presentation of the project in front of a jury.
The I stage jury meeting will take place on the 10th of June, after which the 5 finalists together with the date for the II jury meeting will be announced.
Final results will be announced in August 2020.
The competition jury will consider the announcement taking place only a week before the competition deadline, therefore will not assume any changes nor updates in the submitted proposals in the subject to the new dates of TAB.
The task of the curator is to set up an innovative and responsive theme related to the context of Estonia and relevant in the contemporary world of architecture. The jury will also evaluate the topic's potential to cross the international news threshold and raise interest in a wider cultural audience.
The competition jury is composed by: Villem Tomiste (Head of TAB Committee, Head of the Jury), Raul Järg (Director of the Estonian Centre for Architecture), Veronika Valk- Siska (Ministry of Culture, Adviser (Architecture and Design), Liina Soosaar (assistant to the curator of TAB 2019), Tiit Trummal (architect), Epp Lankots (Estonian Academy of Arts, Senior Researcher), Johan Tali (architect).
