Copenhagen-based architecture studio ADEPT has completed new wooden public promenade in Aalborg, Denmark. The new public space was developed to combine recreational facilities with learning activities by being merged into the landscape and the sea.

Called Vestre Fjord Park, covering a total of 2,000-square-metre space, is stretched out to the sea and creating a narrow pathway to circulate around it. The overall form of the park acts as a landscape element itself, which forms terraced roofs in multiple directions as well as playgrounds for children. 

Developed to provide the full experience of its unique site by the Danish fjord, the Limfjord, the flowing structure of the park creates a distinguished character between the natural landscape, the activities and functions. The park aims to contribute to many daily users' life and local character to enhance their activities.

"Here one finds ‘real’ nature - water, bird life, fish, fields, beach and meadows - that together with a wide variety of physical activities and outdoor facilities create the setting for new active experiences related to both nature and the city," said ADEPT.

"The vision behind the project is to encourage direct contact to the fjord by establishing better accessibility from land to sea. At the same time, the project aim to strengthen the story of the landscape with a multi-functional building structure that frames the many potential activities on the water," added the architects.

"The precise cut between the two water spaces is defined by the isthmus binding together landscape and built structure - exactly where the experiences of fjord, activities and park become one."

The project was completed in collaboration with landscape architects GHB. Vestre Fjord Park is among the three nominees for the Danish Landscape Award 2017 and was recently awarded among the best new buildings in Aalborg.

ADEPT has an office in Copenhagen and works in the fields of architecture and urbanism with a specific focus on the human scale in cities and buildings. The office was founded in 2006 by Anders Lonka, Martin Laursen and Martin Krogh, that are still in charge of ADEPTs profile.

The studio recently completed Cubic Houses, comprised of several shifted individual 'brick volumes' in Copenhagen. ADEPT also unveiled its plans to envision the largest development in Budapest for 30 years.
