Istanbul-based architecture studio Tago Architects has completed a new mid-rise residential block in the heart of Istanbul, emphasizing the industrial background of the city with wide windows, high ceilings, calm colors and use of steel on the entrance canopy, while providing an aesthetical living space for its inhabitants.
Named Maya Residence, the eight-story building includes ground-level retail space, seven levels of condominiums, two underground parking levels, and a sightfull rooftop garden.
The 2,500-square-metre building provides a smooth transition within an existing city fabric in which considered as an urban infill project set in Istanbul, Turkey ever-changing Erenkoy neighborhood.
The project, led by award-winning architect Gokhan Aktan Altug - who is also founder of Tago Architects - draws inspiration from a wide array of sources from the existing environment.
Combining an urban industrial feel with sleek modern lines, and communities both professional and residential, Maya Residence is a lively addition to an already bustling part of the city.
"Maya is a boutique condominium project. By emphasizing the importance of natural light, open space, and the simplicity of the building’s materials, designer meant to fit within the neighbourhood’s aesthetic," said TAGO Architects.
"Several nods to the building’s urban setting and the industrial background that shaped the neighborhood include wide windows and high ceilings, the use of steel that shapes the entrance path, and an exterior of panelized siding with a color from the industrial tones of grey," added the studio.
"Unconventional touches, like a "puzzle" that slides along the facade, breaks monotonism based on self-repetitive plan. Maya apartment is a prime example of design-based living located amidst a busy urban center."
