Henning Larsen Architects has, in collaboration with NCC, Cebra, SLA, Grontmij and architect Winie Ricken, been prequalified for the competition to design the new European School , which will be located in the Carlsberg district of Copenhagen. Five teams will participate in the competition to design a new 14,000 m² school, the purpose of which is to prepare students for further studies at international universities.

Carlsberg Byen Ejendomme and the Municipality of Copenhagen are driving the European School. The school will be adjacent to two historically-listed Carlsberg buildings: Maskincentralen and Kedelhallen. When complete, the school will include spaces for teaching and recreation, a gymnasium and outdoor spaces.

Located in the Carlsberg district, the school is to become an attractive choice for students and function as a unique offering in the metropolitan area. The architectonic expression of the building is therefore paramount to the project:

“The European School needs to be a building of high architectonic value. Through its visionary design, the European School will contribute to the creation of an internationally-oriented municipal primary and lower secondary school, which, as regards to content and organisation, builds on the principle of best practice in relation to creating an innovative school and securing an urban integration that supports the development of the Carlsberg district towards a dense, culturally diverse, vibrant and internationally-oriented quarter in Copenhagen”, the tender states.

The competition is expected to conclude in April/May 2015. The European School must be ready for inauguration in the beginning of 2018.
