On 9 October the new theatre 'De Stoep' in Spijkenisse opened the doors officially.

The design, which came about in close collaboration between architect UNStudio and Arup, fits seamlessly in the urban surroundings. The internal organisation and the circuit of functions has been designed around the flow of visitors. A strong connection is made between inside and outside.

Arup helped to facilitate the organisation layout and complex geometry by the use of Building Informationi Modelling (BIM), enabling an integrated structural, lighting and building services design. The result is a remarkable building with an inviting and open character.

The new building in the city centre offers a large auditorium with 650 seats and a small multifunctional space with up to 200 seats.

The UNStudio-designed landmark theatre features a grand theatre hall and a small theatre/concert hall with
a capacity of resp. 650 and 200 seats. The entrance and lobby connect seamlessly to the city square. The double curved, partly transparent, roof surface is draped as a second steel skin around the structure.

Arup is responsible for mechanical and electrical engineering, building physics, fire engineering and structural
engineering. A clever structure has created a spacious lobby with a minimal number of columns. The ventilation systems of the auditoria, lobby and stage tower can operate independently, allowing flexible use.The hybrid roof structure facilitates heat extraction, allowing air exhaust all year round and heat recovery during the winter period.
