International Ideas Competition: The Babyn Yar Memorial Site In Kiev

The Canadian charitable foundation, “The Ukrainian Jewish Encounter,” has launched an international ideas competition for the redesign of the Babyn Yar site in Kiev in the Ukraine. Dedicated to the memory of the victims of massacres perpetrated during the Second World War, the site will be intended to serve as an ecumenical space of reconciliation open to the public. It will embody the concepts of humanism, tolerance, democracy and human rights. It should be accessible to everyone, preserve the existing edifices and monuments and respect the landscape.
The competition will be followed by an exhibition entitled, ‘Babyn Yar: The Memory Against the Historical Background.” The competition has received the support of the Union of Architects of Ukraine, from the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory and from the Department for Urban Planning and Architecture of the Kiev City State Administration. The UIA has endorsed the competition, which is in accordance with UIA-Unesco regulations for international competitions in architecture and town planning.
Composition of the international jury
The international jury is composed of: Barbara Aronson, Israel, urban planner and landscape architect; Marti Franch Batllori, Spain, Landscape architect; Heorhiy Dukhovychnyi, Ukraine, architect; Dr. Markus Jatsch, Great Britain, architect; Jörg Michel, Germany, landscape architect, Jimmy Norrman, Sweden, landscape architect; Mykhaylo Hershenzon, Ukraine, architect; Serhiy Tselovalnyk, Ukraine, Chief Architect from the City of Kiev; Volodymyr Pryimak Ukraine), architect. Olivier Philippe, France, Agence Ter, will represent the UIA.
Principle competition dates
Enrolment deadline: 31 March 2016
Deadline for sending projects: 22 May 2016
Deadline for reception of projects by organisers: 25 May 2016. Jury meeting: 1er- 4 June 2016
Awards and Participation procedure
The following prizes will be awarded:
1st prize: 17,000 USD
2nd prize: 12,000 USD
3rd prize: 7,000 USD
4 runner-up prizes at 3,000 USD each.
The competition is open to architects worldwide. The competition language is English. Enrolment fees are 35 US $.
