Shigeru Ban has landed his first UK project – as concept architect for a luxury housing development near Tower Bridge in London. The Japanese architect, best known for his cardboard disaster relief work, has been appointed by John Curran, a private developer who owns a small parcel of land behind City Hall.

The apartments will be built from cross-laminated timber and are being designed in collaboration with CLT specialists Waugh Thistleton. BD understands the Shoreditch-based architect beat off competition from DSDHA, Featherstone Young and dRMM to land the job of executive architect on the project. “Architecture-obsessed” Curran, whose Twitter profile refers to the project, is known to be proud that Shigeru Ban agreed to take on the job. He was in the packed crowd at the Ecobuild trade show last year to hear the Pritzker Prize winner deliver a lecture on his work.
