Amaravati Governmental Complex Concept Design Competition - Exclusive Video and Presentation Packs

As exclusively announced on World Architecture Community over the weekend, Maki and Associates led by Fumihiko Maki won the Amaravati Governmental Complex Concept Design Competition. Today, we are excited to bring more exclusive material on this very important competition which will define a completely new capital complex, comparable to what Brasilia eventually represented, at the beginning of the 60’s.

Andhra Pradesh is one of the 29 states of India, situated on the southeastern coast of the country. It is a large and thriving region with over 50 million population. As a result of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act signed in June 2014 however, the north-western part of the state was bifurcated to form a new state named Telangana which includes the capital Hyderabad.

Amaravati is thus being built to serve as the capital of Andhra Pradesh now that Hyderabad is no longer located in the state. Meanwhile and as per the same act, Hyderabad will remain the joint capital of both states for a period not exceeding ten years, until the development of the new capital Amaravati is complete.

The local government therefore allotted a land of five kilometres square (approx. 5km by 1km) for its new capital complex. The project has all urban land use amenities and three important buildings of symbolic nature. These are the High Courts of Justice, the Parliament and the Secretariat.

For this effort, three notable architecture and urban design firms with international repute were invited to present concept proposals for this historical venture. Theses were Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, Vastu Shilpa Foundation and Maki and Associates, each with their respective concept proposal.

Below, you will find a video grouping all three proposals' fly-overs (11 minutes in total). On mobile devices, please click here to view the video.

In addition, we are very excited to share with you the actual proposal packages. We believe these can serve as examples and inspiration for many of our community members, while others will find them quite interesting and informative.

By clicking the links below, you may download the actual presentation packs of all 3 proposals. Please be mindful that these are quite large (PDF) files which may require a few minutes to download depending on your internet connection speed.
