Rod Hackney has spent his professional life in the pursuit of community architecture. Helping and teaching groups of people who have been unfortunate enough to be in a position where their housing conditions are inadequate, to improve their housing situation. This help has enabling them to take control of their environmental situation, and to acquire the skills of management and construction, to produce their own housing solutions. They are assisted in taking control themselves and producing healthy and sustainable communities, which when completed, often by self-help methods, are affordable enough for families to be brought up in secure and happy surroundings. Many of the schemes which resulted from this community architecture approach have been honoured with international and national awards for good practice and design.
